MANILA — The World Bank has elevated the Philippines to upper-middle-income economy status, recognizing the country’s improved economic performance and growing national income.
The reclassification, which took effect on July 1, places the Philippines among economies whose Gross National Income (GNI) per capita meets the World Bank’s upper-middle income threshold for fiscal year 2026.
Government officials welcomed the development, saying it reflects years of fiscal discipline, structural reforms, increased investments, and a resilient economic recovery.
Finance Secretary Frederick Go said the country’s latest classification demonstrates that reforms introduced by the government are producing positive economic results.
He emphasized, however, that the government’s focus now is to ensure the benefits of growth reach more Filipino families through better employment opportunities and stronger public services.
Officials clarified that the World Bank’s designation does not automatically translate into financial assistance or direct economic benefits for the public. Instead, it serves as an internationally recognized measure of the country’s rising income level.
The Philippines’ new status is also expected to reduce its eligibility for concessional financing and certain development assistance programs available to lower-income countries.
Go described the transition as a natural stage of development, saying stronger economies are expected to rely more on domestic resources to finance national priorities.
Economic managers attributed the country’s improved standing to sustained business expansion, increasing investments, higher employment, and continued policy reforms.
Despite the achievement, economists said the country must continue addressing poverty, inflation, inequality, and the high cost of living to ensure economic growth becomes more inclusive.
Officials said the government’s challenge moving forward is to transform the country’s stronger economic position into meaningful improvements in the daily lives of all Filipinos.
