The heated exchange reportedly witnessed during the Senate’s pre-trial conference for the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte should come as no surprise. Given the high stakes involved, emotions and strong disagreements are inevitable. What matters, however, is that these tensions do not overshadow the legal process or undermine public confidence in the institutions tasked with delivering justice.

Reports indicate that members of the prosecution panel and the Vice President’s defense team engaged in a lengthy and intense argument during the closed-door proceedings on June 18. The situation allegedly became serious enough for Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. to suspend the meeting and intervene before discussions could continue temporarily.

While some may view the incident as a sign of disorder, it can also be seen as evidence of both sides vigorously defending their respective positions. Impeachment is among the most consequential political and constitutional processes in a democracy. It is expected that prosecutors and defense lawyers will fight hard to advance their arguments and protect their interests.

Nevertheless, passion must never come at the expense of professionalism. The public expects those involved in the proceedings to demonstrate restraint, respect, and adherence to established rules. Heated exchanges may generate headlines, but they contribute little to the pursuit of truth and accountability.

The intervention of the Senate Secretariat appears to have served its purpose. According to reports, the proceedings resumed smoothly after officials stepped in to calm tensions and refocus the participants on the task at hand. This underscores the importance of strong institutions capable of maintaining order even during politically charged moments.

As the impeachment trial approaches, all eyes will remain on the Senate, the prosecution panel, and the defense team. The Filipino people deserve a process guided not by political theatrics or personal confrontations, but by facts, evidence, and the rule of law.

In the end, the credibility of the impeachment proceedings will depend not on who argues the loudest, but on who presents the strongest case before the nation.
