MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has formally submitted the tax records of Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate impeachment court following authorization from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The release came after the President approved the disclosure, allowing the BIR to comply with a Senate subpoena despite confidentiality provisions under the National Internal Revenue Code.
According to officials, the subpoenaed records were delivered to the Clerk of Court within the required period and are now being cataloged and verified before copies are released to both parties in the impeachment trial.
The subpoena includes the tax records of Duterte, her husband, lawyer Manases “Mans” Carpio, and several corporations allegedly connected to them.
House prosecutors sought the documents to bolster allegations involving unexplained wealth, arguing that the records are essential in evaluating whether the Vice President’s declared earnings and assets correspond with other financial evidence gathered during the investigation.
The Senate impeachment court had previously recognized the documents as material to the proceedings but ruled that the BIR could only release them upon presidential authorization.
The turnover represents a significant development for the prosecution, which continues to build its documentary evidence against the Vice President.
Duterte has consistently rejected the accusations against her, while her defense panel maintains that the impeachment complaint is politically driven and unsupported by credible proof.
The impeachment court will later determine whether the tax records will be admitted as evidence during the trial.
