MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala delivered the biggest victory of her career after defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in a dramatic three-set comeback, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to claim the 2026 Mubadala DC Open title and make Philippine tennis history.
The 21-year-old Filipina became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles championship, achieving the milestone after completing a rain-delayed final in Washington, D.C.
The championship match was suspended on Sunday because of inclement weather, with Eala leading 2-1 in the second set. When play resumed the following day, the rising Filipina maintained her momentum, leveling the match before dominating the deciding set with a flawless 6-0 performance.
The victory earned Eala her first WTA Tour-level singles trophy and elevated her to a career-best world ranking of No. 20, another landmark achievement in what has become a breakout season.
Her path to the championship underscored the quality of her performance throughout the tournament. Eala eliminated world No. 8 Elina Svitolina before overpowering former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals to arrange a title clash with Pegula, the tournament’s top seed.
Despite surrendering the opening set, Eala refused to be rattled. She responded with aggressive baseline play, consistent shot-making, and composed court coverage to wrest control of the match, leaving Pegula without a single game in the final set.
Pegula, ranked third in the world and a two-time Washington champion, entered the final as the overwhelming favorite. Instead, Eala produced another statement victory, marking her fifth win over a Top 10 opponent this season and reinforcing her emergence as one of the brightest young talents on the WTA Tour.
Overcome with emotion after securing championship point, Eala thanked the fans who supported her remarkable journey.
“I feel so much love… My first chance at a title, knowing it won’t be my last,” Eala said during the trophy presentation.
The triumph is expected to stand as one of the most significant achievements in Philippine sports, with Eala becoming the country’s first WTA singles champion and adding another milestone to her rapidly growing international résumé.
