MALOLOS CITY — Vice Governor Alex Castro’s initiative to provide free fuel to tricycle drivers and delivery riders in Bulacan has earned widespread praise, offering relief amid rising petroleum prices.

Hundreds of beneficiaries received free gasoline, easing the daily expenses of those who rely on travel for their livelihoods.

The program is funded from Castro’s salary, with support from his household staff, including SB Sunshine Garcia, who also manages food assistance for participants.

“We know that our countrymen, especially drivers, are struggling. Even in a small way, we want to help,” Castro said, highlighting the program’s goal of supporting sectors directly affected by soaring oil prices.

Recipients welcomed the initiative, saying the free fuel helps offset daily transportation costs and provides immediate financial relief.

While local advocacy group Bagong Mukha praised the effort, it noted that future assistance will depend on fuel price trends and program funding.

Experts also caution that such measures are temporary solutions, urging long-term policies such as regulated fuel prices or targeted subsidies to support transport workers sustainably. elamigo/
