MANILA — Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continues to make waves on the global stage after a breakthrough campaign at the prestigious Indian Wells Open in California.

Despite bowing out in the Round of 16, Eala walked away with significant gains — both financially and in the world rankings.

Millions in prize money

By reaching the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament, the 20-year-old pocketed $105,720 (around ₱6.3 million) in singles prize money. If her doubles participation is included, her total earnings from the event could reach around $115,000 or roughly ₱6.8 million.

The amount represents one of the biggest paydays of Eala’s young professional career and reflects her steady rise in the women’s tennis circuit.

Career-best WTA ranking

More importantly, Eala earned 120 WTA ranking points for reaching the Round of 16.

The points propelled her from No. 32 to a career-high world ranking of No. 28, putting her closer to a potential Top-20 breakthrough.

Her run included a memorable victory over world No. 4 Coco Gauff, who was forced to retire due to injury while trailing in their match — a result that sent Eala into the Round of 16.

She eventually bowed out against Czech standout Linda Noskova.

Next stop: Miami Open

Following her Indian Wells campaign, Eala is expected to compete in the Miami Open — another WTA 1000 tournament where she previously enjoyed a breakthrough run.

With her improving ranking, growing confidence, and experience against top-ranked players, the Filipina sensation appears poised to continue her climb in the WTA tour and strengthen her bid to become the first Filipina to crack the world’s Top 20 in women’s tennis.
