MANILA — The Philippine weather bureau has formally declared the start of the southwest monsoon season, warning that more frequent rain events could heighten the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.
PAGASA said the habagat has become firmly established following several days of dominant southwesterly winds across the country.
Although Severe Tropical Storm Domeng has intensified, forecasters noted that the monsoon will be the primary source of rainfall affecting much of the Philippines. Western Luzon, including Metro Manila, is expected to receive intermittent to widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms.
The onset of the monsoon season typically marks the beginning of wetter weather conditions, with July and August often recording the highest rainfall totals.
In Quezon City’s Barangay Road District, residents are bracing for possible flooding. Community members said heavy rains have repeatedly caused water to accumulate rapidly in recent years, forcing some families to relocate temporarily during severe weather.
Local government units have prepared public warning systems to help residents respond quickly to changing weather conditions.
Many residents are also looking forward to the completion of a pumping station project that they hope will provide a long-term solution to the area’s drainage problems.
PAGASA encouraged the public to stay informed through official weather updates and take precautionary measures as monsoon rains become more frequent in the weeks ahead.
