MANILA — Alex Eala’s impressive run at the National Bank Open came to an end Monday after the Filipina tennis star was beaten by Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, 6-4, 6-0, in the Round of 16.

Eala, who entered the match riding a seven-match winning streak, struggled to maintain her momentum against the experienced Bencic, who took control particularly in the second set.

The Swiss player closed out the opening set, 6-4, before completely dominating the second frame and blanking Eala, 6-0, to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Despite the defeat, Eala’s performance in Toronto marked another significant step in her rapidly rising career. She advanced deep into a WTA 1000 tournament and continued to gain valuable experience against some of the world’s top players.

Bencic’s victory also ended one of the most impressive winning stretches of Eala’s career.

Eala will now turn her attention to her next tournaments as she looks to build on her strong showing in Canada.

The Filipina star’s Toronto campaign may have ended in defeat, but her breakthrough continues to make waves on the international tennis stage.
