MANILA — Alex Eala’s remarkable run at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships ended in the Round of 16, but her record-breaking performance has delivered significant gains in both world ranking points and career earnings.

The Filipino tennis star etched her name into history by becoming the first Filipina to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon, one of tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments.

Eala opened her campaign with an emphatic straight-set victory over Renata Zarazua before overcoming Maya Joint in three sets to book a highly anticipated third-round showdown with five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.

Displaying poise and confidence beyond her years, Eala stunned Swiatek in straight sets, 7-6(9), 6-2, one of the biggest victories ever achieved by a Filipino tennis player.

Her dream run eventually came to an end against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who secured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory after nearly three hours of intense competition.

Although eliminated, Eala walked away with 240 valuable WTA ranking points, strengthening her position as one of the world’s top female players. Under the WTA’s ranking structure, players accumulate points based on their best tournament performances over a rolling 52-week period.

Financially, Wimbledon also proved rewarding for the Filipino ace. Her Round of 16 appearance earned her £300,000, equivalent to approximately US$396,100.

Prior to the year’s third Grand Slam, Eala had already amassed US$871,438 in tournament prize money during the 2026 season, reflecting her consistency across multiple events.

Her Wimbledon breakthrough completed a highly successful grass-court campaign that saw her win the Birmingham WTA 125 championship and reach the semifinals of the Berlin Tennis Open.

The series of accomplishments has further strengthened Eala’s growing reputation as one of Asia’s brightest tennis stars while inspiring a new generation of Filipino athletes to dream of success on the international stage.
