MANILA – A new public opinion survey showing that 88 percent of Filipinos support a Senate impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte has intensified calls from lawmakers for her to directly face the allegations in a formal proceeding.

Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V of La Union said Friday that the Tangere survey reflects a strong public expectation for accountability, stressing that the issue is no longer confined to political debate but now represents a broader demand from citizens for answers.

He said the results indicate that most Filipinos see the Senate trial not as a form of punishment but as a proper venue for Duterte to respond to accusations and clarify issues raised against her.

The survey, conducted from April 22 to 23, also showed that 70 percent of respondents believe the Vice President should personally testify, while 51 percent want her to present evidence to address concerns over financial records.

Ortega said the findings weaken claims that the impeachment process is politically motivated, arguing instead that the public is calling for transparency and a formal accounting of the issues involved.

He added that there is growing frustration among citizens over what he described as repeated evasions in discussions involving confidential funds and other financial matters.

House Committee on Public Accounts Chair Terry Ridon echoed the sentiment, saying the results clearly show that the public wants answers in an official forum.

He emphasized that accountability—not politics—should be the focus, adding that Filipinos expect clear explanations backed by documents and evidence rather than public statements alone.
