MANILA, Philippines — Philippine tennis standout Alex Eala moved into the fourth round of the Miami Open after a straight-sets victory over Poland’s Magda Linette, 6-3, 7-6(2), on the Grandstand Court at Hard Rock Stadium.
Eala controlled much of the opening set to take a 6-3 win before facing a tougher challenge in the second frame. Linette briefly held the advantage several times, leading 4-3, 5-4, and 6-5, but the Filipino ace refused to back down and forced a decisive tiebreak.
The 31st seed then delivered a dominant performance in the breaker, quickly taking a 3-0 lead and eventually sealing the match. The victory also leveled Eala’s career head-to-head series with Linette at two wins each.
Eala now advances to the Round of 16 where she will face Czech tennis player Karolina Muchova, who is ranked No. 14 in the world and seeded 13th in the tournament. Muchova booked her spot in the next round after overcoming Britain’s Katie Boulter, 6-3, 7-5.
The 19-year-old Filipina continues to make history on the international stage, as her strong showing in Miami highlights her growing reputation as one of Asia’s promising young talents in women’s tennis.
